Since May 2016 Gonzalo has served as Chief Innovation Officer leading four Innovation Verticals: Product Innovation, Tokbox, Innovation in Personal Communications and more recently, Telefónica Educación Digital. He reports to Telefónica’s Chief Commercial and Digital Officer (CCDO).
Prior to this appointment, Gonzalo led Telefónica’s start up Accelerator Wayra as it’s CEO since it’s start in 2011, helping it become one of the largest technology accelerators in the world, with operations in 12 countries across two continents. His experience expands from Europe to Latin America where he headed the Chairman’s Office for Telefónica Latin America for five years. He also held different positions within the Legal Department at a regional level for Telefónica International, as well as at a local level as Legal Director for Telefónica Móviles México.
Gonzalo has a degree in Law by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, an LLM by Georgetown University and holds an MBA from IESE Business School – University of Navarra. Gonzalo is a passionate marathon runner.

(ROOM N105) C.S 2.2. Surfing the tsunami of the Technological Revolution Era. To surf or to drown?

Innovation can completely change the business model of an organization, which must be able to adapt proactively.

During a conversation with Gonzalo Martín-Villa, he will explain how this new technological revolution can be an opportunity and at the same time a threat to businesses´ survival depending on how corporate decisions are taken to become innovative.

As Chief Innovation Officer at Telefónica he will explain how the company decided to “surf the tsunami of digital disruption” instead of “drowning” in its brutal waves through his leading role in the group’s different innovation verticals: Open Innovation, Core Innovation and Innovation Investments.

The importance of implementing an innovative corporate culture is crucial to businesses and it´s “everyone’s business” (Departments and professionals).

Gonzalo will also share his experience with Telefónica´s Internal Audit Department and their important role providing assurance on innovative projects.
