Known as the Reina Sofía Museum, it has collections of 20th Century and contemporary art. The museum is housed in the former Madrid General Hospital, a large neoclassical building from the 18th Century in the Atocha district, close to the train and metro stations.
Together with the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and CaixaForum, it forms part of the so-called “Golden Art Triangle” of Madrid. Its permanent collection includes some of the finest works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. Also highly important are the collections of surrealism (Picabia, Magritte, Tanguy, etc.), cubism (Juan Gris, Braque, Delaunay, Léger, etc.) and expressionism (Bacon, Saura), as well as various other techniques (Fontana, Diego Rivera, Calder, Matta, Antonio López, Tàpies, Barceló, etc.).
